 Category Solutions provides intelligent stock tracking and market analysis products and services for the retail marketplace. The Task: An Intelligent Stock Monitoring System for Retail Shelves Category Solutions sought to build a smarter retail shelving system that could sense low and out of stock conditions. The information could them be gathered real-time into a central database to trigger action at the store and create a series of performance reports. Category Solutions needed engineers with both low-level hardware knowledge as well as LAN and server expertise to create the entire system utilizing readily available components. The SSI Wireless Solution Included a Rapid Protype to Measure and Wirelessly Report Product InformationThe SSI engineers started by understanding the specific requirements of the system, research potential solutions, design and source the required hardware and software components, and implement the entire system. SSI engineers used available OEM components to rapidly prototype a demonstration system utilizing an Atmel AVR microcontroller in concert with a series of sensors. These sensors measure and transmit product information to the server via TCP/IP. The server then uses this information and the restocking algorithms and database to determine if any action needs to be taken. A variety of situations and actions can be configured or selected by the user. The system uses a browser-based Web interface to seamlessly convey status information and reports to store managers. The system is designed for rapid deployment and ease of expansion into other areas of interest. Category Solutions has been so impressed by SSI's work on the demonstration model that they plan to take advantage of our expertise during the rollout stage and for future product area expansions. |
